Intense Pulsed Light – IPL Treatment
Cumulative sun exposure, environmental damage, and the natural process of aging gradually leave visible marks on the skin — uneven pigmentation, broken capillaries, redness, sun spots, and a general loss of the clarity that healthy skin once had. Intense pulsed light (IPL) treatment is a non-invasive way to address these concerns without surgery, downtime, or significant recovery. IPL uses calibrated pulses of light and heat to target the pigment and vascular irregularities responsible for an aged or uneven appearance, while simultaneously stimulating new collagen and elastin formation beneath the surface. The result is a more uniform skin tone, softened redness, and a fresher overall complexion.
Dr. Maurice Khosh offers IPL treatments at his Park Avenue practice in New York City. Dual board-certified by the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and the American Board of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery, Dr. Khosh is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS) and a member of the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and the American Academy of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery. He completed his medical degree at Albert Einstein College of Medicine — where he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) Medical Honor Society — followed by residency at Columbia University and a facial plastic surgery fellowship at the University of Washington. With three decades of experience and recognition as a perennial Castle Connolly Top Doctor, a Best Doctors in America honoree, and a Super Doctors New York Rising Star, Dr. Khosh brings the same calibrated, anatomy-first approach to non-surgical skin treatments that defines his surgical practice.
How IPL Treatment Works
IPL emits broad-spectrum, multi-wavelength light that penetrates the upper layers of the skin without removing or wounding the surface. The light energy is absorbed selectively — by melanin in areas of unwanted pigmentation, and by hemoglobin in dilated capillaries and areas of redness. As these targets absorb the light, they convert it to heat, which gradually breaks down excess pigment, shrinks superficial blood vessels, and stimulates the skin’s natural production of collagen and elastin. Over a series of treatments, this layered effect addresses many of the visible signs of photoaging while progressively improving overall tone and texture.
“IPL is a technology where settings matter as much as the technology itself. Skin type, pigmentation pattern, and underlying redness all influence how the light should be calibrated. Done well, IPL can refresh the complexion without ever looking like a treatment was performed.” — Dr. Maurice Khosh
Conditions IPL Can Address
IPL is most effective for patients with light to medium skin tones who are concerned with the following:
- Sun Damage and Photoaging: Reduces brown spots, age spots, and uneven pigmentation caused by cumulative sun exposure
- Diffuse Redness: Softens generalized facial redness, including blotchiness and visible vascular irregularities
- Broken Capillaries: Shrinks superficial blood vessels along the cheeks, nose, and chin
- Uneven Skin Tone: Improves the overall consistency and clarity of the complexion
- Early Signs of Aging: Stimulates collagen and elastin to gradually firm and refresh the skin
IPL can be performed on the facial skin or on any other area affected by sun damage or environmental stress, including the neck, hands, chest, and other body regions.
What to Expect from the Procedure
A typical IPL session at Dr. Khosh’s Park Avenue office takes as little as 30 minutes. After cleansing the skin and applying a cooling gel, Dr. Khosh delivers calibrated pulses of light to the targeted areas using a handheld applicator. Most patients describe only a slight, brief discomfort with each pulse — sometimes compared to a light snap against the skin. Topical numbing cream can be applied beforehand for patients who would prefer added comfort. There is no downtime: patients can return to work, social engagements, or other normal activities immediately after the appointment. In most cases, optimal results develop over a series of four to six treatments spaced several weeks apart.
