Hair Transplant Surgery
For both men and women experiencing hair loss, modern hair transplant surgery offers a permanent, natural-looking solution that previous generations of the procedure could not match. Whether the concern is a receding hairline, a thinning crown, sparse eyebrows, or scarring from previous procedures or injury, today’s hair transplant techniques — particularly Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) and Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) — can restore meaningful hair density with results that look entirely natural. The transplanted follicles are taken from genetically hair-loss-resistant areas of the scalp, which means once they have established themselves at their new location, the results are permanent. Hair transplant is one of the cosmetic procedures available at Dr. Khosh’s Park Avenue practice in New York City.
Designing a hairline is fundamentally an artistic exercise — the technical procedure of moving hair follicles has been standardized over the past two decades, but where the follicles are placed, at what angle, and in what density determines whether the result looks natural or obvious. Dr. Maurice Khosh brings a unique combination of qualifications to that decision: three decades of facial plastic surgery experience, paired with a lifelong study of figure drawing and calligraphy that has refined his eye for facial proportion and natural-looking design. Dual board-certified by the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and the American Board of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS), Dr. Khosh has been recognized as a perennial Castle Connolly Top Doctor and a Best Doctors in America honoree.
FUT vs FUE Transplant Techniques
Hair transplant surgery is typically performed using one of two methods, follicular unit transfer (FUT) or follicular unit extraction (FUE). For the patient, the primary difference between these two techniques is in the incisions. In FUE, the incisions are more discreet because they are small circular incisions that are dispersed throughout the donor area of the scalp. In FUT, hair is transplanted using a single, long incision in the middle of the donor area or back of the scalp.
FUT and FUE also differ in regards to how the hair is harvested from the donor area. An FUT method removes a group of 1-4 follicular units from a single, thin strip of donor area before it is dissected and prepared for implantation by the surgeon. This method allows the surgeon to implant the highest quality grafts for the best possible outcome, and the FUT method also requires less donor area than a large FUE transplant.
In contrast to the follicular unit transfer, a FUE method involves direct extraction of each follicular unit from the back and sides of the scalp. The FUE method is dependent upon specific instruments and automated technology. Many patients prefer FUE, as it allows for a more efficient procedure, faster results and less detectable scars.
In the majority of cases, Dr. Khosh performs the favored FUE hair transplant technique to avoid unsightly linear scarring from strip methods. FUE is an excellent option for patients who want to wear their hair very short or those that prefer minimal downtime after the procedure. Dr. Khosh is exceptionally skilled in both FUE and FUT hair transplant techniques, and he will help each patient understand the advantages and disadvantages of each as it pertains to their specific hair loss situation and overall treatment goals. Regardless of which method you choose, our practice can ensure you achieve the natural and long-lasting results you hope for in hair restoration.
