Can Rhinoplasty Improve Breathing and Appearance at the Same Time?

Rhinoplasty can enhance how your nose looks and help with breathing issues if the surgery is planned with airflow in mind. If you have ongoing blockage, one-sided congestion, or trouble breathing through your nose, your consultation should cover both appearance and function.

At Dr. Maurice M. Khosh’s Manhattan office, rhinoplasty planning considers your cosmetic goals, nasal structure, and any breathing problems. Dr. Khosh is board-certified in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery and otolaryngology-head and neck surgery, so he is trained in both nasal appearance and nasal function.

When Can Rhinoplasty Help Breathing?

Cosmetic rhinoplasty can change the bridge, tip, width, or overall balance of your nose. Breathing only improves if the surgery also treats what is causing the blockage.

You might visit because you don’t like a hump, crooked bridge, wide tip, or a past surgery result, and then mention that one side of your nose always feels blocked. That information changes the focus of your care.

The American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery recommends considering both the look and function of the nose in rhinoplasty. In practice, both the outside shape and the inside airway should be checked if you have breathing issues.

What Makes Functional Rhinoplasty Different?

Functional rhinoplasty aims to support the nose and improve airflow, helping you breathe better. Cosmetic rhinoplasty is about the nose’s shape and how it fits your face. These goals often go together since the nose affects both appearance and breathing.

If you’re looking for functional rhinoplasty in NYC, you need a plan that considers both how your nose looks and how you breathe. This approach reviews the bridge, tip, septum, nasal valves, support, and any breathing problems together.

When Are Septoplasty or Nasal Valve Repair Part of the Plan?

A deviated septum can narrow the airway and make one or both sides of the nose feel blocked. Septoplasty addresses the septum when that structure contributes to obstructed airflow.

Nasal valve collapse is a separate issue. The nasal valve is one of the narrowest parts of your airway and needs support if it narrows or collapses when you breathe. The AAO-HNS says septoplasty and turbinate treatment can complement nasal valve repair, but they don’t replace it if the valve itself is the problem.

This difference is important because breathing problems can be caused by more than one part of the nose.

Can a Cosmetic Nose Job Affect Breathing?

Yes. Cosmetic rhinoplasty changes the structure of your nose, so breathing must be considered in the plan. Making the nose too narrow, losing support, or missing functional problems can affect how you breathe after surgery.

Careful planning protects your nose’s structure while meeting your cosmetic goals. Your history of injury, past nasal surgery, ongoing blockage, or collapse when you breathe deeply can all affect the surgical plan.

Why Choose a Surgeon Who Understands Nose Shape and Nasal Function?

Your nose affects how you look, but it also helps you breathe. If you want both appearance and breathing improved, it’s important to choose a surgeon with the right training.

Dr. Khosh uses his training in facial plastic surgery and ear, nose, and throat care during rhinoplasty planning at his Park Avenue office. In your consultation, we will talk about your appearance goals, breathing issues, and the parts of your nose that affect airflow.

FAQ About Rhinoplasty and Breathing

Is septoplasty the same as functional rhinoplasty?
No. Septoplasty fixes or straightens the septum. Functional rhinoplasty looks at airflow more broadly, including support and nasal valve function if needed.

Can I have cosmetic rhinoplasty and breathing surgery together?
Yes, cosmetic and breathing-related nasal surgeries are often planned together if your anatomy and goals allow it. The best plan depends on your exam, symptoms, health history, and what changes you want.

Saw Dr. Khosh for a fractured nose. He reset my nose beautifully (and with little discomfort to me) and then discussed some of my sinus issues with me upon my follow up visit. Never felt like he was rushing me out and felt very confident in his abilities. I would highly recommend to anyone needing plastic or reconstructive options!

Upon hearing of the overwhelmingly positive experience a friend of mine had in choosing Dr. Khosh as her surgeon, I decided to make an appointment for my own septoplasty/rhinoplasty/turbinate reduction. Although I was slightly skeptical as the praise I had heard seemed a bit hyperbolic, all uncertainty dissipated after meeting the Doctor and his staff. My pre- and post-operative experience was excellent in terms of concerns adequately addressed prior to the surgery and mitigation of any bruising in the convalescent period. Despite my apparent predisposition to rather slower healing, a year after the surgery, my nose looks really pretty and my breathing entirely unobstructed! I highly recommend Dr. Khosh!

AMAZING!!!!!! I had Dr Khosh perform lipo on my chin/neck and my result is unbelievable! Better than I could have expected! I met with a couple of surgeons and the second I met with Dr Khosh I knew he was the one I was going with. He was compassionate and explained every detail of what would take place during the surgery and what to expect during recovery. I even emailed a few times during recovery with various questions and he got right back to me asap which was really comforting! I honestly fully recommend Dr Khosh, he did an amazing job and is an amazing person.
