Manhattan Juvederm and Manhattan Restylane
In Manhattan Juvederm and Restylane are two of the most commonly used fillers for smoothing of facial wrinkles and depressions. Hyaluronic acid is the active material in each product. Hyaluronic acid is a complex molecule that naturally exists in living tissues in the space in between cells. Hyaluronic acid acts as a sponge to absorb and retain fluid. When injected under or into the skin, Hyaluronic acid adds volume and plumps the injected area, by drawing and retaining fluid. The injection process is a simple office procedure that is carried out after application of some topical anesthetic to the skin. The FDA has approved in Manhattan Restylane, Juvederm, and Prevelle Silk for injection into the nasolabial fold (the fold of skin between the nostril and the corner of the mouth). These same products have been used as an off label indication for smoothing lines and depressions in other parts of the face.
Restylane and Juvederm typically last for six months before disappearing. The manufacturing companies have developed related products: Perlane and Juvederm Ultra Plus. These products are similarly made from Hyaluronic acid, but persist at the site of injection for about nine months. The added longevity of the products is a byproduct of added cross linkage of molecules during the manufacturing phase. Perlane and Juvederm Ultra Plus are better suited for deeper injections into the skin. New products Juvederm-XC and Juvederm Ultra Plus-XC have added lidocaine (an anesthetic) to make the injection process more comfortable. In certain patients, filler injections can be combined with other office procedures such as Botox Cosmetic injections to achieve better overall facial rejuvenation. Restylane injection into the lower orbital region helped eliminate the apparent fat bulging in the lower eyelid area. This can be much more effective and natural than a lower lid blepharoplasty.
